Why Your Meta Ads Stopped Working — A Diagnostic Checklist
ROAS falling off a cliff usually is not the algorithm. Here are the six causes in the order you should check them, and how to tell them apart.
Your ROAS was 3.4. Now it is 1.6. Nothing changed. Something changed.
Before you rebuild the account or blame the algorithm, work this list in order. Nine times out of ten the answer is in the first three.
## 1. Creative fatigue (check frequency first)
Open your ad set and look at **frequency**. Above 2.5 in a 7-day window on a cold audience means the same people are seeing the same ad repeatedly, and CTR decay follows within days.
The tell: impressions flat, CTR down, CPM up slightly, conversion rate roughly unchanged. That is fatigue, not a landing page problem.
## 2. Signal loss on the pixel
If your browser pixel is the only thing reporting conversions, you are under-counting. iOS privacy prompts and ad blockers eat a meaningful share of events, so Meta optimizes against incomplete data and slowly drifts toward worse audiences.
The tell: your Shopify revenue is fine but Meta's reported purchases dropped. That gap is measurement, not performance. The fix is server-side Conversions API alongside the pixel, with deduplication by event ID.
## 3. Learning phase resets
Every meaningful edit — budget change over ~20%, new creative, audience swap, bid change — can push an ad set back into learning. Brands that "optimize" daily keep their account permanently in learning and never get stable delivery.
The tell: performance is erratic day to day with no trend. Freeze the account for 7 days and see what stabilizes.
## 4. Audience overlap and cannibalization
Multiple ad sets bidding on overlapping audiences means you are competing with yourself. CPMs rise, and the auction rewards nobody.
The tell: CPM climbing while your competitors' seasonality does not explain it. Consolidate ad sets — broader targeting with better creative usually beats five narrow ad sets.
## 5. Offer and landing page mismatch
The ad promises 30% off. The landing page shows full price and buries the code. Click-to-purchase collapses.
The tell: CTR is healthy, CPC is fine, conversion rate is down. That is a post-click problem. Check page load time on mobile too — every second past three costs you double-digit percentages of conversions.
## 6. Seasonality and competitive pressure
Q4 CPMs can run 40–70% above Q2. If your ROAS drop lines up with a calendar event and your CTR is unchanged, you are being outbid, not out-performed.
## The 60-second version
- CTR down, frequency up → **creative fatigue**
- Meta purchases down, Shopify revenue flat → **tracking**
- Erratic daily swings → **learning phase**
- CPM up, targeting unchanged → **overlap or seasonality**
- CTR fine, conversion rate down → **landing page or offer**
